Strong data governance requires more than digital infrastructure. Nations also need practical guidance, templates, and tools that support the day-to-day work of managing and applying data.

The BC Regional Information Governance Centre (BC RIGC) develops and shares practical resources to help Nations strengthen their data governance systems. These materials are informed by Nation-led projects, applied governance work, and collaboration across First Nations governments and organizations.

Tools & Resource Library

Practical Resources for Data Governance

Our goal is to make it easier for Nations to launch data initiatives, develop governance policies, and build internal capacity without needing to start from scratch.

A Growing Knowledge Base

The Tools and Resource Library brings together materials that support different aspects of governance and administration.

These resources are developed through Nation-led Data Demonstration Projects and refined as Nations apply them in practice. By sharing tools and approaches across communities, the BC RIGC helps reduce the time and effort required to undertake new data initiatives.

Resources support activities such as:

  • community surveys and census initiatives

  • data governance planning and organizational structures

  • policy development and privacy frameworks

  • program evaluation and service improvement

  • data and records management practices

Many of these resources can be accessed directly through the Build Your Own Data Centre (BYODC) or shared through workshops, advisory support, and collaborative projects.

On-the-ground Impact with Skeetchestn Natural Resources

The BC RIGC is working with Skeetchestn Natural Resources (SNRC) to improve how natural resource data are organized, stored, and shared. SNRC’s project lead shared "Once [a Nation] has really good data sharing agreements and they understand what all the clauses mean... what does this mean for the community... then when you go and have conversations with people, you know what you're advocating for and the reasoning why."

What You Can Access

Survey and Data Collection Tools

Access ready-to-use survey templates developed through Nation-led Data Demonstration Projects. These templates help reduce the time required to design questionnaires and make it easier to launch community surveys or census initiatives.

Demonstration Project Resources

Explore tools and methodologies developed through BC RIGC-supported Nation-led Data Demonstration Projects. These examples show how Nations are applying data in practice to support planning, service delivery, and governance.

Governance Tools and Templates

Find practical tools that support data governance activities, including planning guides, documentation templates, annotated policies, and resources that help Nations organize and manage their data.

Data Governance Assessment

The BYODC also includes the Data Governance Assessment, a structured tool that helps Nations evaluate their current data governance capacity.

By completing the assessment, Nations receive a tailored action plan that identifies priority areas and recommends relevant tools and resources within the library. The assessment provides a practical starting point for Nations looking to strengthen their data governance systems.
