We help implement data sovereignty in practice

— through tools, projects, advisory support, and digital infrastructure.

Practical support for strengthening First Nations data systems

Strong governance depends on reliable information. Yet many First Nations governments face barriers when trying to access, organize, and use the data needed for planning, service delivery, and decision-making.

The BC Regional Information Governance Centre (BC RIGC) provides practical tools and technical support that help Nations strengthen data governance in practice. Our services focus on reducing the time, cost, and complexity involved in accessing and using data.

How We Support Nations

Data Governance Assessment

Understand your Nation’s current data governance capacity and identify priorities for strengthening it. The assessment produces a tailored action plan and connects Nations to practical tools and resources.

Advisory & Funding Support

Access technical expertise to plan and implement Nation-defined data initiatives. The BC RIGC provides advisory support and project funding to support implementation.

Surveys & Data Collection

Design and implement community surveys or census initiatives that generate Nation-owned data for planning and governance. The BC RIGC provides end-to-end support for Nation-led data collection projects.

Tools & Resource Library

Access templates, guides, and governance tools developed through Nation-led Data Demonstration Projects. These resources help Nations strengthen data systems without starting from scratch.

Start Where You Are

Nations engage with the BC RIGC in different ways depending on their priorities.

Some begin with a Data Governance Assessment to establish a baseline and develop an action plan. Others begin with a specific initiative, such as a community survey, governance project, or data systems improvement effort. The BC RIGC team works alongside Nations at different stages of readiness to support the practical implementation of data governance on Nation-defined terms.
